SFF’14 Movie Review: “Fed Up”

Childhood obesity is certainly one of the major problems facing this country. Katie Couric produces and narrates Stephanie Soechtig’s documentary, focusing on the food/drink companies contributing to the health crisis we face. While the intentions are overall good, I feel as though the film is caught up in it’s own scare tactics and unapologetic message that no matter what you eat, you’re fucked.

Lets begin with the positive, “Fed Up” definitely has a message, and it’s something I think many public school systems are going to claw after to screen for the student body. And there lies a questionable dilemma; will the fear tactics bring a sort of wake up call to today’s youth? Screen this film for elementary and middle schoolers, you may see an affect, High school on the other hand, the students, some at least, have reached a point where they’re in a rebellious state of mind, sometimes doing to opposite gives them self gratification.

In the film, it certainly shows that some high schoolers look pass the fact that their campus is serving Taco Bell or Burger King. While others, justifiably are trying to make a change in the schools food and drink selection. The problem we’re facing are the companies like Coco-Cola, who’re simply in it for money, and lets be real, money is a major driving factor regarding why not much change has been made.

Soechtig’s visual styling is captivating enough for younger audience to, no pun intended, digest the information on an easier level. But, when we come right down to it, we find ourselves asking if this film is simply propaganda for anti-propaganda, or is it the other way around? There will certainly be a lot of mixed reactions to this film, when it does receive a theatrical release. It doesn’t have the punch of “FOOD, Inc.” or the moxie of Morgan Spurlock’s cult sensation, “Super Size Me”; the films method about getting the message across, while unorthodox, does manage to find away to make the problem very apparent.
