Frightful October Horror Movie Picks – DAY 29

October 29, 2013

Screen shot 2013-10-29 at 12.32.40 PM

“American Psycho”

A wealthy New York investment banking executive, Patrick Bateman, hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he escalates deeper into his illogical, gratuitous fantasies of pure carnage and uncontrollable sexual desires.

A brilliant psychological thriller about how the mind works and how it sometimes plays tricks on you. Christian Bale gives an utterly chilling and memorable performance, next to playing Batman, this is Bales most iconic performance. The movie as an adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis book is not very good. I’m not sure what it is, but there’s something about his books that just never seem to translate from script to screen. Be that as it may, as movie, it hits all the right thematic notes, and when an adaptation fails at it source material, but succeeds in the cinematic realm (a-la-“The Shining”), that’s when my attention is truly caught.

Directed by: Mary Harron

Screenplay by: Mary Harron & Guinevere Turner

Starring: Christian Bale, Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Bill Sage, Chloë Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon, Samantha Mathis, Willem Dafoe and Jared Leto

“American Psycho” is available on iTunes.
