“The Blob” (1988)

GAWD, this is a remake I simply relish in as much as I can. I love this movie, it’s so campy, and unnecessarily gory, it simply puts a big dumb grin on my face. It’s from “Nightmare on Elm Street 3” director Chuck Russell, and screenwriter Frank Darabont. Without question this is a movie that makes a great double feature pairing with “John Carpenter’s The Thing”.

This remake of the 1958 horror sci-fi about a deadly blob from another planet which consumes everyone in its path is going to new heights and grounds of terror. Teenagers try in vain to warn the townsfolk, who refuse to take them seriously, led by meek daddy’s girl and the town motor-punk. What makes this movie stands out more than the original ’58 film is the creation and method of the actual blob itself. I’d rather not spoil the twist, but lets just say it suits the time the movie came, just like when the original came out during the 50’s Red Scare era of sci-fi.

Directed by: Chuck Russell

Screenplay by: Frank Darabont

Starring: Kevin Dillon, Shawnee Smith, Jeffrey DeMunn, Candy Clark, and Joe Seneca

“The Blob” is now available on iTunes.
