“Christine”

I found ANOTHER classic King-adaptation, John Carpenter directs this psychological/supernatural thriller about a killer car dated back to the 1950s. Ok, for those of you who’ve never heard of the book or film, let me begin by saying, it’s not as stupid as it sounds…well, ok, the concept is pretty ridiculous. In fact, now that I remember, the book didn’t leave much of an impression on me. BUT, thanks to Carpenter’s eerie style and haunting score, we’re given a movie that explores the obsession of the male psyche, their love for woman, popularity, but more importantly their cars.

Christine’s soul is living in the body of 1958 Plymouth Fury, Arnie, in present day 1983, buys her from an old lot. His attachment to the car becomes problematic and down right obsessive, his attitude and state of mind begins to change, from nerdy math wiz to nasty punk. Christine is controlling him (like most girlfriends), and when a real girl enters Arnie’s life, Christine shows her vengeful side and will stop at nothing from keeping Arnie all to herself.

Directed by: John Carpenter

Screenplay by: Bill Phillips

Starring: Keith Gordon, John Stockwell, Alexandra Paul, Robert Prosky, and Harry Dean Stanton
