Frightful October Horror Movie Picks – DAY 11

“Gremlins”

I’m trying to go outside the box with my picks this month, I wanna steer clear of the most obvious choices, like “Halloween” or “A Nightmare Before Christmas”, these types a films. But, I think I can make an exception for this Joe Dante/Chris Columbus/Steven Spielberg holiday-horror-fest. I LOVE this movie, and like “A Nightmare Before Christmas”, its a movie you can either watch during the months of October or December. It really is the best of both worlds and was truly a defining genre masher of it’s time. Hell it was one of big reasons why the MPAA created the PG-13 rating.

Dante has a real talent for taking absurdity to nuance levels, what do I mean? You’ve got these tiny little green monsters terrorizing the pre-Hilly Valley town this movie is set in, people are dying, running scared, and reminiscing a horrifying childhood tale about daddy being found dead in a chimney dressed as jolly old St. Nick. And then, that special moment occurs, hundreds of these red-eyed bastards tone their mayhem down for 10 minutes, when Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” comes on. For me, that sums it all up regarding why I hold this movie so dear.

Directed by: Joe Dante

Written by: Chris Columbus

Starring: Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, John Louie, and Corey Feldman

“Gremlins” is available on iTunes.
