The Lucky 13: My Most Anticipated Films of 2013

December 15, 2012

2012 has been a GREAT year for movies, and 2013 doesn’t look too shy for years greatness either. Lots of good looking flicks are coming our way, some we didn’t think would happen, others didn’t expect could happen, and mostly we knew should happen. But whatever the case may be, here’s my lucky 13 picks for the most anticipated films of next year!

13. “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” – Eight long years and we’re finally getting that long-awaited sequel to Robert Rodriguez & Frank Miller’s “Sin City”. This time, most of the stories structure will focus on Miller’s graphic novel A Dame to Kill. Word has it that the original principal cast is back; including Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Clive Owen, and Mickey Rourke and since the sudden passing of Michael Clarke Duncan, Dennis Haysbert will be taking over the role of Manute.

In Theaters October 4th, 2013

12. “Kick-Ass 2” – “Kick-Ass” has been deemed a dark cult-comedic classic, to give you an idea, it’s up there with “Darkman” & “Super”. Mark Millar returned with a sequel to his graphic novel and a spin-off on the fan favorite psychopathic young female heroine in Hit-Girl. The movie “Kick-Ass 2” will be an adaptation of both graphic novels. Nicolas Cage is expected to return along with everyone from the original cast. Of course there are a few new faces to the franchise, including John Leguizamo, Lindy Booth, Donald Faison, and Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes. Jeff Wadlow (“Never Back Down”) has taken over the writing and directing reigns for Matthew Vaughn, Vaughn is still on board as Executive Producer.

11. “Pacific Rim” – While I don’t feel shame for Guillermo del Toro’s sudden exit from directing “The Hobbit”, I am happy to see him doing what he does best…monster movies! And boy oh boy do we have the match up of the century…MONSTERS vs. GIANT ROBOTS! Only the director of the “Hellboy” series has the nerve to bring us something this batshit crazy awesome to the big screen.

In Theaters July 12, 2013

10. “The Wolverine” – Let’s pretend that “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” never happened, well Hugh Jackman surly would like to forget it too. “The Wolverine” will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker James Mangold (“Walk the Line”) and written by “The Usual Suspects” scribe Christopher McQuarrie. This film will be set after the events of “X-Men: The Last Stand”), Logan finds himself alone in Japan facing off a personal and extremely dangerous foe…Silver Samurai. The film is based on the graphic novel-Japan storyline by Frank Miller.

9. “Man of Steel” – Batman got the proper reboot thanks to Christopher Nolan, so it only seems natural that Supes gets the same TLC the Nolan clan, this time the Man of Steel will be headlined by fanboy favorite director Zack Snyder. Get ready for a darker, brooding, intense, super fast/slow visual style Superman movie only Zack Snyder could give us. Thankfully in keeping with tradition, a relitively unknown actor will play Superman, british thesp Henry Cavill, who can be best scene from the Showtime series “The Tudors”. And even more to be thankful for is the lack of Lex Luthor in this film! General Zod be the villain here!

In Theaters June 14th, 2013

8. “Elysium” – Neill Blomkamp returns to direct his second feature. After the success of his Best Picture Oscar nominated alien thriller “District 9”, Blomkamp returns to the realm of sci-fi about a man (Matt Damon) who takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized world he lives in, a world set in the year 2159, where the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth.

7. “Evil Dead” – Evil Dead fans like myself went absoultely apeshit crazy when news broke that “The Evil Dead” would be remade. But after seeing the trailer for this reboot, rather than a remake, we’ve begun to accept something none of us saw coming…our anticipation for this movies release. Bruce Campbell & Sam Raimi have godfathered this movie very closely, and promised us fans that we’re in for a treat like no other. With a franchise first, the so called ‘new Ash’ will be a chick, played by Jane Levy, her character Mia is being hailed by the original creators as the female equivalent of Ash! Mighty big shoes to fill Miss Levy, you up for it?

In Theaters April 12th, 2013

6. “This is the End” – James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Jay Brauchel, David Krumholtz, Martin Starr, wait is that long awaited “Freaks & Geeks” movie actually happening? No. Actually everyone listed will be playing themselves, set in the home of Franco on the eve of the end of the world, these funny guys are stuck in house wondering what to do about the the apocalypse all while wondering if they’re gonna have enough chips and dip to keep the party going. Seth Rogen & his writing partner Evan Goldberg write & direct this comedy, based on a short film Rogen and co-star Brauchel created. Also to be featured in the film as their-self; Paul Rudd, Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, Mindy Kailing, Kevin Hart, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Aziz Ansari, and Emma…Watson?

In Theaters June 14th, 2013

5. “Thor: The Dark World” – Phase 2 continues, “The Dark World” will follow Thor after the events of “The Avengers” leading our God of Thunder hero across the stars to other worlds, taking on fierce creatures, armies, and of course the Dark Elves led by fearsome Malekith. Thor fans, fret not, we’re in good hands here for this sequel, “Game of Thrones” director Alan Taylor is at the helm!

4. “Star Trek: Into Darkness” – Now establishing a new timeline, the age for the NEW Star Trek to stretch its creative legs is upon us. In this dark follow-up to J.J. Abrams incredibly successful film, Kirk and co. find themselves against a terrorist unlike any other who has a personal vendetta against both Kirk & Spock. Trek fans have speculated that Benedict Cumberbatch’s villain will turn out to be Gary Mitchell, the telekentic mad man from an episode of season 1 of the original series, even though it’s been announced that his character name is John Harrison, could it be a rouse?

In Theaters May 17th, 2013

3. “Iron Man 3” – Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is looking very promising, with Shane Black sitting in command as the co-writer/director, the route this film is going seems to be in the right direction for story and character development, especially for a complex character that is Tony Stark, who is now facing his archnemesis at last…the Mandarian!

In Theaters May 3rd, 2013

2. “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” – After just seeing the first part to Peter Jackson’s “Hobbit” trilogy, my excitment for part II are higher than ever. “An Unexpected Journey” leaves you with a fantastic cliffhanger, that the thought of waiting an entire year to see what happens next frusterates the fandom in me with such remorse. Huh, I sorta remember this type of feeling from ages ago. “The Desolation of Smaug” will find Bilbo & Thorin’s company journey through dangerous woods on their way to the Lonely Mountain, meanwhile Gandalf will be leaving them alone for his own quest which will bridge this series into the next…hopefully.

1. “Only God Forgives” – Quite a random pick, I know, but this is Nicolas Winding Refn & Ryan Gosling! The dynamic duo that brought us my favorite film of 2011, “Drive”! And now they’re back for more with this hard core, ultra violent, neo-noir, crime drama about a Bangkok police lieutenant and a gangster settle their differences in a Thai-boxing match, both of whom have NOTHING to lose at this point in their lives. I want stark imagery! Memorable scenes! And Ryan Gosling being a total badass motherfucker like before. Gimme everything Refn! I’m ready!
