The Lucky 13: Most Anticipated for 2012

December 31, 2011

2012 is gonna be epic, and not just because it’s gonna end (never knew a Mayan to be lyin’). There are sooooo many amazing movies coming out. Here are my lucky 13 picks…

13. “The Amazing Spider-Man” – Marc Webb of “(500) Days of Summer” fame directs his second feature, the reboot to the Spider-Man film series. You’ve got to be one brave man to agree to directing that. The likes of Andrew Garfield as the title character, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacey, and Rhys Ifans as Doc Conners aka The Lizard have drawn my interest in seeing the movie.

12. “The Hunger Games” – Great book, a captivating plot, and a bad ass female role. This should be a huge hit and a lot more gratifying of teen book adaptation than those fucking “Twilight” films.Besides, Gary Ross is directing and co-wrote the screenplay.

11. “John Carter” – Edgar Rice Burroughs classic is finally being adapted as a big screen epic, that really does look promising. Like Brad Bird, another Pixar director is making his live action feature debut, Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo”).

10. “The Bourne Legacy” – I love the Jason Bourne films, it’s one of my favorite action trilogies going. Matt Damon was the shit in those movies, plus the books the films are based on…page turners! So, naturally another one seems fitting, but with a catch…NO JASON BOURNE! What?!? The Bourne series is taking a new turn with a new character, played by Jeremy Renner, who has some kind of connection with the events of the past three films & Bourne himself. This sounds…really cool. Especially for the tone these movies have created, it’s fitting that it would go in this direction. Tony Gilroy, the writer of all the Bourne films, returns to scribe for a fourth time and taking the reigns as director.

9. “ParaNorman” – Henry Selick is a genius with his animated stop-motion films. “Coraline” is his best one to date, but after seeing the preview for “ParaNorman”, I’m wondering why he wasn’t on board this project, because it looks really good. It’s my kind of horror-comedy genre and the animation looks stellar.

8. “Gravity” – Alfonso Cuaron (“Children of Men”) directs George Clooney & Sandra Bullock in this claustrophobic sci-fi thriller set in the darkness of space. If Cauron is behind this, it’s gonna be insane.

7. “Looper” – Rian Johnson returns to the directors not since “Brothers Bloom”, but he’s mostly remembered for directing the brilliant crime neo-noir high school drama “Brick”. In “Looper”, Johnson reunites with Joesph Gordon-Levitt about a time traveling assassin who gets far to deep with the mob and out of nowhere his older future self shows up, played by Bruce Willis, to help him out. As you can see in the picture below JGL’s face has literally been morphed to look like a younger version of Willis, so that the match will be made perfectly. Johnson stated in an interview that he feels that this film could be the new definitive, ‘loop’ free, time travel film.

6. “Brave” – My brother knows the director of this movie! So cool! Pixar storyboard artist Mark Andrews makes his feature debut with the studios first quasi-serious fantasy film. Looks a lot like in the vein of “Braveheart”, “Lord of the Rings”, and a dash of Disney’s “The Sword & the Stone”.

5. “Prometheus” – Ridley Scott returns to the realm of Sci-fi. The big question remains, is this movie a prequel to or even have any relation to his first big hit, “Alien”? If you compare the two trailers it’s quite possible. I’m stoked for this release.

4. “Skyfall” – Daniel Craig’s third outting as Agent 007, BOND IS BACK!

3. “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” – Peter Jackson returns to Middle-Earth!!! “The Hobbit” is not only coming to the big screen, it’s being split into two movies, so we can get everything that is “The Hobbit”, with the movie bridging properly into the Oscar winning “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

2. “The Avengers” – Iron Man! Thor! Captain America! Hulk! Black Widow! Hawkeye! Nick Fury! AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!!! As a Marvel geek…I’ve died and gone to heaven. As a geek in general, having Joss Whedon write & direct the movie…well…I’m not sure what’s beyond dying and going to heaven.

1. “The Dark Knight Rises” – Christopher Nolan complete his Dark Knight legacy in his third and final entry. Batman vs. Bane, this match-up has Batman nerds gasping for air wondering what’s going to happen. Will Bane break the Bat? No, rephrase that; will Nolan break the Bat? July 20th is gonna be interesting.
